Mental Health Month - Seeking Spiritual Help

Where do you go to find spiritual or mental help? Friend, family member or pastor. What if they are too busy? What if you feel you need professional help to turn the corner with your pesky issue?

People need a confidential place to unburden their hearts, minds, and souls. They need a trusted and credentialed pastoral counselor who will listen. If you have a relationship with Jesus Christ, you know and believe he is the source of all wisdom and knowledge.  However, when a person only hears annoying static of negative thoughts or layers of hurt that numb the emotions, God’s voice feels absent. It is part of God’s plan to send, at the appointed time, a caring person to listen and walk the healing journey with you.

Moses had Jethro. King David had Nathan the Prophet. Naomi had Ruth. The disciples had Jesus. Who do you have?

Jethro gave Moses wise advice when dealing with relationship issues and how to manage the family.  And Moses had a big family to care for.  Jethro’s counsel help Moses spiritually and physically.  “Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him (Exodus 18:17-18).”

When King David’s moral compass stopped working, the Prophet Nathan stepped in to point out David’s failings. The prophet’s advice opened David’s eyes to see his immoral behavior and how he alienated himself from God.  Nathan’s counsel was direct, “You are the man!  Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes (2 Samuel 12:9)?”

Naomi’s relationship with Ruth, her daughter-in-law, was special.  Both women went through a difficult loss together. Naomi valued her daughter’s love and loyalty, and she gave Ruth some proper relationship counsel. “One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for (Ruth 3:1).”

Jesus left the wilderness to start his ministry not by performing miracles and preaching great sermons.  He sought out disciples to counsel them how to love, heal and preach the Good News.  He empowered them to begin a holy movement in their community.

Our human instinct is to deal with spiritual or emotional pain in isolation.  The reverse is true.  Seek spiritual counsel.  Gather people around you to support you.  Who has God sent to counsel you?
